Formation Dynamo for Revit — Introduction

Automate Revit through visual programming, without writing a line of code

This 3-day introductory course opens up Revit automation to architects and civil engineers with no development experience at all. Through node-based visual programming, you learn to handle lists of data, generate and transform geometry, read from and write to Revit, and connect your projects to Excel. By the end you can build a genuinely useful script, make it reliable, and hand it to colleagues through Dynamo Player without them ever opening Dynamo.

Course objectives

Understand where Dynamo fits in a Revit workflow and navigate its interface
Place and connect nodes to build a readable, maintainable graph
Handle data types and use mathematical functions within a graph
Master input and output lists, the core of reasoning over sets of elements
Exchange data between Excel and Dynamo in both directions
Create points, lines, polylines and polygons through visual code
Move and transform geometry along a vector, then generate surfaces and solids
Access a Revit model's geometry and data and modify element parameters
Place Revit families and adaptive components automatically
Generate views and sheets in bulk, then distribute a script through Dynamo Player

Detailed program (5 modules)

What Dynamo is and where it fits in a BIM workflow, navigation and user interface, and the principle of placing and connecting nodes to build a first graph.

Target audience

  • Architects looking to automate repetitive project tasks
  • Civil engineers handling model data at scale
  • Draughtspersons facing series of views or sheets to produce
  • BIM managers looking to equip their team with in-house scripts
  • Advanced Revit users with no programming experience whatsoever

Prerequisites

  • Thorough knowledge of Revit: families, parameters, views and sheets
  • Good general computer skills
  • No prior programming experience is required
  • Setup: DirectX 11 compatible graphics card or higher, 64-bit Windows, i5 3 GHz processor minimum
  • Machine resources: 6 to 8 GB RAM, 5 GB free disk space, 1280x1024 display or higher
